What is the best way to stamp a production that mixes landscape, oversized, and letter-size pages?

Real productions are rarely uniform. Here is how to keep stamps readable and consistent when pages rotate, shrink, or stretch to ledger size and beyond.

Why mixed sets break naive stamping

A stamping tool that places a number at a fixed coordinate from the lower-left origin behaves perfectly on a set of letter-size portrait pages and unpredictably on anything else. A landscape page stored with a rotation flag looks sideways to the tool's coordinate system, so the stamp can appear along the left edge, reading vertically. An oversized ledger or E-size drawing gets the stamp in the same place from the corner, but at the same font size it becomes a speck relative to the page. The mix itself is common. Handling rotation the right way

The first decision is whether the stamp should follow the page's stored rotation or the displayed orientation. Almost always you want the displayed orientation: whatever the reader sees when the page opens, the stamp should sit in the same corner from their point of view. Check how your tool treats the PDF rotation attribute. Some tools stamp in raw page coordinates and ignore rotation, which produces sideways numbers; better tools compose the stamp in the viewer's frame. Test this on a page you know is stored rotated before running the whole batch.

There is a separate question about pages that are stored upright but whose content is sideways, which happens constantly with scanned landscape documents fed through a portrait scanner. In that case the PDF has no rotation flag, and the stamp will be upright while the content is sideways. That is usually acceptable, because the stamp orientation matches how the page is displayed, but if the set will be printed and read in landscape, consider rotating those pages during pre-processing so the content and the stamp agree. Scaling the stamp for oversized and undersized pages

For page sizes beyond letter and legal, a fixed font size stops working. A stamp that is readable at letter size becomes hard to find on a 24 by 36 inch drawing and, when that drawing is later printed at reduced size to fit a binder, it may become unreadable. A practical rule is to scale the stamp with the page: set the font as a proportion of the shorter page dimension, or define two or three size tiers (letter and legal, tabloid and ledger, larger formats) and assign each tier its own font size and margin. Either way, the goal is that the stamp occupies a similar visual proportion on every page.

Small pages need the opposite care. Receipts, phone screenshots, and business card scans can be smaller than the stamp's default footprint, so the number either overlaps content or gets clipped. Options include adding a border to enlarge the canvas, placing the stamp on a slip sheet immediately before the small page, or scaling the font down with a minimum floor so the number remains legible. A pre-processing checklist for mixed productions

Before stamping, run a page-size and rotation report across the set. Most PDF tools and many command-line utilities can list the dimensions and rotation of every page in a file. Sort the results and you will immediately see how many size classes you are dealing with and where the outliers live. Separate the outliers into their own batch, or configure per-size rules if your stamping tool supports them, and normalize any pages that are stored rotated but should not be. Then stamp a pilot batch that includes at least one page from every size class and rotation state, print it, and look at it on paper. Confirm the corner is consistent from the reader's view, the font is legible on the largest and smallest pages, and nothing is clipped. Only after the pilot passes should you stamp the full set.
